Getting the Most from Internet Sales Staff: The Powersports Internet Sales Manager Role
What a powersports internet sales manager does: a role scorecard, the five numbers to own, a daily routine, the floor handoff, pay plans and hiring questions.
Quick answer
A powersports internet sales manager turns online shoppers into appointments that show and units that sell. The role owns five numbers: time to a two-way conversation, contact rate, appointment rate, show rate and close rate. It runs on a daily lead routine, written answers that answer the question, video walkarounds and a clean handoff to the floor.
When we first wrote this article in 2020, our point was that a powersports dealership is one business, and internet sales staff are only as good as the way you set them up. That still holds.
This update covers the role itself: what a powersports internet sales manager (ISM) should own, the numbers to judge them on, their routine, the handoff, pay and hiring. If you are still deciding whether you need the role, start with our guide to who should handle internet leads at a powersports dealership.
What an internet sales manager does
An internet sales manager turns online shoppers into people standing next to a unit in your showroom, and then into deliveries. Website forms, OEM leads, marketplace inquiries, texts and calls from online ads all land with them or the team they run.
In a smaller store the ISM often sells their own deals. In a busier store or a dealer group, they lead a small internet or BDC team and coach. Either way the job is six verbs: answer, qualify, book, hand off, follow up and report. It is not webmaster, photographer or IT help desk.
The internet sales manager scorecard
Write the role down before you hire for it or judge it. This is our recommended starting point.
| Responsibility | What good looks like | How you check it |
|---|---|---|
| First reply | A person answers the customer's actual question, on the channel they used | Time to two-way conversation |
| Qualifying | Unit, timeline, trade, cash or finance, and who else decides | Key CRM fields filled |
| Booking | A specific day and time offered in the first real conversation | Appointment rate |
| Handoff | Salesperson briefed, unit ready, customer greeted by name | Show and close rates |
| Follow-up | Every touch has a reason; stalled deals get notes and an accurate disposition | Weekly thread review |
The five numbers the role owns
| Number | How to calculate it | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Time to two-way conversation | Minutes from lead received to the customer replying or a live call | Whether anyone is really in the deal. An auto-reply does not count |
| Contact rate | Leads reached in a two-way conversation ÷ total leads | How good the first replies are |
| Appointment rate | Appointments set ÷ leads contacted | Whether the ISM asks for the visit |
| Show rate | Appointments that showed ÷ appointments set | How well visits are confirmed |
| Close rate | Units sold ÷ appointments that showed | How well the handoff and floor work |
The first number is deliberately not "first response". Our article on what slow lead response costs a powersports store explains why the clock should stop at a real conversation.
Worked example (illustrative numbers, not benchmarks). 120 web leads in May. The ISM reaches 78 (65% contact rate) and books 36 (46% of those contacted). 25 show (69%) and 10 buy (40% of shows): about 8% of leads.
Coach the number that is weakest against your own history; if the show rate is the problem, more leads will not fix it. Set targets from your CRM's last 90 days, compared with the same months last year, because powersports traffic is seasonal. We know of no trustworthy public benchmark for powersports stores.
A daily and weekly routine
The best internet salespeople are predictable. This is the routine we recommend.
Daily
- Opening. Work overnight leads, oldest first. Answer each question, then offer a time to visit.
- Confirm today's appointments. Check that each unit is on the floor, prepped and charged.
- Brief the floor. Two minutes per appointment: who, which unit, what was promised, trade, cash or finance.
- Through the day. New leads within minutes, scheduled follow-ups, and video walkarounds on request.
- Before close. Every open lead has a dated next action, and every no-show gets a call or text today.
- End of day. Notes and dispositions a colleague could pick up tomorrow.
Weekly
- Start of the week. Review the five numbers against the same weeks last year and pick one stage to fix.
- Mid-week. Review real lead threads with each person who works leads, using the thread review in our lead follow-up cadence guide.
- Before the weekend. Confirm appointments, check that advertised units are still in stock, and set days-off cover.
- Monthly. Listen to recorded calls (see sales call tracking for powersports dealerships) and mystery-shop your own website.
Skills that separate good internet salespeople
Written answers that answer the question
Weak replies answer a question nobody asked. A shopper asks whether a side-by-side is in stock and what the out-the-door price is. The weak reply thanks them for their interest and asks when they can come in. The strong reply says yes or no, breaks out the price with freight, setup and fees, attaches photos of the actual unit and offers two specific times.
Video walkarounds
A 60 to 90 second phone video of the actual unit answers more than a paragraph. Say the customer's name, show what they asked about first, start the engine, show any wear on a used unit, and end with a specific invitation: "I can have it out front Saturday at 10." Our guide to inventory photos that sell powersports units covers still images.
Booking appointments, not just quoting
A good ISM answers the price question and still books the visit. Dodging it costs trust. Then give a reason to come in that a price cannot: a test ride, a fit check, a trade appraisal. If a shopper texts back, reply by text; our guide to texting powersports customers covers consent.
Notes someone else can act on
"Thinking about it" tells the next person nothing. "Wants the gray one, waiting on spouse, trade is a 2019 ATV, call Thursday after 5" lets anyone pick the deal up.
The handoff to the floor
The original article warned against customers feeling "passed off" between internet and floor. The cure is a handoff checklist for every appointment:
- The salesperson has read the thread: unit, trade and payment question.
- The unit is out, clean, charged and fitted with any accessories discussed.
- The customer knows who will greet them, by name.
- The ISM introduces the customer in person when they are in the building.
- Nobody asks a question the customer already answered online.
- Credit for the sale was agreed in advance.

Where most internet sales manager job descriptions go wrong
Search for this role and most of what ranks is job postings and powersports trade articles from 2007 and 2008. The postings tend to pile on everything digital: leads plus inventory photography, website updates, vendor management, social media and sometimes IT support. Where they say how the role is judged, it is units sold. That breaks the role in three ways:
- Every extra duty is time away from waiting buyers. In a seasonal business, the weeks leads pile up are often the weeks new units need photos and listings. The reply is what slips.
- Units sold alone cannot be coached. A unit count cannot show whether replies, booking, shows or the floor slipped. The five numbers can.
- Nobody tests the real job at interview. The role is mostly writing, video and phone work, and few hiring processes test them.
Our recommendation: give the ISM the buyer conversations and the five numbers, and time-box everything else.
How to pay an internet sales manager
Pay plans vary by store. The common shapes, in general terms:
| Plan | What it rewards | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Salary plus a bonus per internet-sourced unit | Volume | Little reason to care about the handoff or gross profit |
| Salary plus a bonus per appointment that shows | Booking real visits | Pair it with close rate |
| Salary plus bonuses on two or three of the five numbers | Coachable behavior | Too many targets blur focus |
| Commission on their own deals | Ownership from first reply to delivery | Slow leads get neglected |
| Share of internet-sourced sales the floor closes | Working with the floor | Needs reliable lead-source tracking |
Whatever the shape, agree credit splits with the floor in writing.
What government wage data shows
US government data has no "internet sales manager" category, so these figures are general. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics' 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics cover "other motor vehicle dealers" (NAICS 4412), the industry group that includes motorcycle, ATV, boat and RV dealers. Annual wages:
| Occupation (BLS) | 25th percentile | Median | 75th percentile |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retail salespersons | $34,080 | $41,210 | $58,250 |
| First-line supervisors of retail sales workers | $49,570 | $63,020 | $78,800 |
| Sales managers | $72,450 | $103,220 | $155,890 |
These cover every job title in each occupation across the industry group, so they are not powersports-specific or an ISM benchmark. For comparison, the national median for all retail salespersons was $35,410.
Commission plans also have to fit wage law. The federal overtime exemption for commissioned employees of a retail or service establishment applies only if the regular rate is more than one and a half times the applicable minimum wage and more than half of pay over a representative period of at least one month is commission (29 CFR 779.412). Other exemptions and state laws can also apply. This is general information, not legal advice; review pay plans with an employment attorney.
How to hire an internet sales manager
Look for clear writing, comfort on the phone, organization and satisfaction in a booked appointment. Product knowledge can be taught faster than writing and follow-through.
- Write the scorecard first and share it with candidates.
- Give a written lead test. Three real, anonymized leads (a price question, a trade question, a vague one) and 20 minutes. Does each reply answer the question and ask for a visit?
- Run a phone role-play with a customer who wants a price and will not come in.
- Ask for a video walkaround of a unit on the floor, sent to a "customer".
- Check their CRM note and disposition from the role-play.
- Let them meet the floor and ask the salespeople what they think.
- Agree a 90-day plan on two or three of the five numbers.
Interview questions worth asking:
- "Walk me through the first ten minutes after a web lead arrives."
- "A customer wants your best out-the-door price by email before visiting. What do you send?"
- "Tell me about an appointment that did not show. What did you do that day?"
- "How does the salesperson learn everything you know before the customer arrives?"
- "Which number did you move in your last role, and how?"
- "What would you stop doing if lead volume doubled next week?"
Listen for named numbers, real examples and a habit of offering specific times.
Where software fits
An ISM can only manage what they can see: every open lead, its owner, its next step, and the five numbers without a spreadsheet.
In PSX Ascend's AI-powered powersports CRM, ALMA, the Automated Lead Management Assistant, keeps lead communication timely across phone, text and email and prompts live connections between shoppers and your team. It makes no AI voice calls. Associates work fresh leads; when a deal stalls they leave notes and a disposition, managers are prompted to review, and ALMA takes over the repetitive re-engagement and brings the customer back to a person. Dealer groups can route leads across rooftops with multi-location BDC software.
One dealer describes the result this way (dealer-reported):
"The PSXAscend website, combined with their CRM, has allowed us to connect in a two-way conversation via phone, text, or email 99% of the time in less than 1 minute from the time a lead is submitted." Chuck Scott, GM, Edge Performance Sports (read more dealer feedback)
